Throughout this 2000 year process of normalizing divisions among believers, we have consistently neglected the fact we Jesus should unite us, and unless we choose to make a change, we will continue to forget this fact. We, as the modern church, say that we hold to Pauls message that we shouldnt be conformed to this world, but when we look at the world, there seem to be just as many divisions. He had received a report from the household of Cloe that there were quarrels among the members of the Corinthian church. Divisions never really ended with Pauls letters; they just appear to have evolved into having more sophisticated names. There was still a fourth group, and in some ways I think they were probably the worst. Just as there was competiveness for honor and prestige among the orators of the first century, it also seems like there is competition between the pastors and churches of today. Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? My answer was that it all depends on the motive. Sermon 5: Who is the Most Important? Obviously, here at Peninsula Bible Church we cannot do that. Polhill says, every Corinthian had their own favorite preacher (237). Religious snobs want to be a part of a small group who Paul here introduces that which can cure divisions, both negatively and positively. Their divisions, lack of church discipline, lawsuits, abuse of Christian liberty and over-emphasis of the gift of tongues, all illustrate this root problem. So rather that detailing their accomplishments as orators, Paul describes their functions (Paul planted, Apollos watered, etc.) Like I talked about in the first posting, the emerging church makes me question a lot of things they are doing. Now, the Apostle Paul is very concerned about this matter of incipient division in the church at Corinth, and he begins dealing with it in this powerful appeal for unity in Verse10: I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. There are many other things that do cause serious problems stemming from the outside world. It is sad to see that our world appears just as divided today as it did back in the first century. The Corinthian Church. Paul did not want to present the Gospel as an orator, competing for students as they did. We are so proud of them when they look right, but when things start to fall apart, the church begins to fall apart as well. So undoubtedly there was a big group that followed Paul. The followers of Jesus may have believed in Jesus words only, and did not believe that the writings of Peter, Paul, and the other apostles were really Scripture. Try it some time. You only have to listen around you today and you find outstanding leaders being held up by their congregations as almost the equal of the Lord himself in their value to the church. For example, in the first section from 1:10 to 4:21, it's errors regarding division. 10 I appeal to you, brothers,[ a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. I always have, and always will believe that this overly exaggerated concept of denominations is a problem. Unless its mended, the tear gets bigger and bigger, doesnt it? Others bragged that they were followers of Peter (1 Corinthians 1:12). In verse 10 we see both Pauls affection for the Corinthian church, and his authority as an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the body of Christ at large there are many who can make a contribution to the understanding of Christ. 1-False prophets (2 Corinthians 11:13). Each group claimed to be better than the others, and party spirits began to grow in the church. It is a serious threat to the life of a church to find people choosing favorite preachers, to the degree, at least, that they do not want to listen to anyone else. These kinds of things happen when there are divisions in a church. In my experience though, I find that it is carnal and unspiritual leaders that put up walls and fences between members of the body. 2 Corinthians Now to this, there should be a division that exists considering that there are some denominations that do teach correct biblical doctrine, while other churches deviate from correct biblical doctrine in order to teach their own false doctrines. This consumerism that we face today in the end doesnt seem all that much different from the way the Christian faith was treated like just another philosophy back in the days of Paul. There is no other name big enough, great enough, glorious enough, and powerful enough to gather everybody together, despite the diversity of viewpoint and the differences of background or status in life, than the name of Jesus. And just as the Corinthian church was not above the petty rivalries of its time, neither is the modern church above becoming involved in such shouting matches. There are the Calvinists and the Arminians and the Dispensationalists -- these are some of the things that are held up as the "summum bonum," the highest good, in theology. As a result, this led to the division among Christian converts and to the Christian community as a whole. Paul wants the Corinthian church to mend the broken relationships that have been caused by the divisions among its members. It is possible that these divisions represent competing house churches, some founded by Paul, some by Apollos. He begins the process of developing them into leaders who will also preach the gospel and found more churches. We have Jesus only groups even today. When you get men's eyes off all these status symbols, and call them back away from following men to the Person of Christ and his cross, all the divisions will disappear. Take the various mega-churches for example, whose charismatic pastors live in mansions. The Gentiles coming into this new Church do not seem to be able to see the differences between it and a Greco-Roman philosopher gathering disciples and educating them in a particular philosophy. There is not a single teacher who ever lived who can heal the hurt of a broken heart, or supply energy and adequacy to someone who feels worthless and unable to function in society, not one. We have our theological view points, and even our philosophical ones (even though we could have less of that in our churches today in my opinion) but we also have our social dimensions as well. 4-The churchs failure to discipline. People begin to think things about him that are not true, and expect things from him that he is unable to deliver. God is not confused, and He does not contradict Himself. They were also not afraid to be mentioned in Pauls letter to the church. Christ belongs fully to every believer in His spiritual body, the Church. That, of course, is as it should be. It builds him up too much; it makes him a rival, to some degree, of the Lord himself. Now, in one verse he introduces to us the cure for these divisions (Verse17): For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom [literally, "wisdom of words"], lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. They will not all be the same flavor; they will not all have the same characteristics. So Paul is insisting that the Corinthians, and all believers, have doctrinal unity that is clearly based on Gods Word. Some boasted of their special spiritual gifts; others felt left out. Now, Paul says this is all basically, fundamentally wrong. I would agree that we find ourselves in much the same situations as those listening to the Greek philosophers/orators.
